What kind of filter should you use?

How important are the filters to the efficiency and life of your HVAC equipment? Does it really matter what type of filter you buy? Which filter type is recommended?

There are 2 types of filters most commonly available for residential installations:

Fiberglass

Many homeowners and multi-family communities choose fiberglass filters because they are easy on the pocketbook. If you’re changing your air filters as often as you should be then saving money on filters might be a concern for you. However, this type of filter media does not adequately filter the air in your home and therefore allows more particulates into your HVAC system.

Over time this will cause strain and breakdown of system components. This breakdown causes your system to require more energy to function thereby increasing the amount of energy you use in your home. That increase in utility bills is a cost that can be avoided when certain simple steps are taken to improve the performance of your HVAC system. In addition to an increase in energy consumption, your system will wear down faster and eventually require costly repairs or complete replacement well before it’s time.

Pleated Filters

Pleated filter media covers a larger surface area and removes more unwanted dust and particulates without extensively compromising your system’s airflow. There are a variety of pleated filters on the market that filter out a list of particulates from your indoor air such as mold, bacteria, pet dander, and even cigarette smoke.

To our families, friends, and customers we recommend using standard pleated filters like the one pictured to the left.
